History The Museum of the City of Gdynia


Functioning in Gdynia at the end of the 30s The City Museum has been revived after the Second World War. The first plan to fill this gap appeared in 1961, when the electoral program of the national councils put a password to establish the Museum of Gdynia. The case came out of the project phase in 1968, when the city began renovation of the historic house, from the early twentieth century - the future seat of the museum. After the renovations, in 1970, building on street Starowiejski 30 (so-called "House of Abraham") was transmitted to the City Public Library to organize its collection and dissemination of the Department of Materials and Collections on the history of the town of Gdynia, later transformed into the Documentation Department of History. Its main task was to gather historical documentation on the town and port, mainly photographs and publications, and conducting heritage of the city. In the mid-70s outlined concrete plans for the establishment of a separate department instead of a museum facility. We managed to realize them in the early 80s Once granted approval in December 1982 by the Ministry of Culture and Arts, 6 January 1983 the President of Gdynia, pursuant to an order called the Museum of the City of Gdynia. Its activities include office would include collection of items of material culture from the history of the city and making them available, conducting educational activities and exhibitions, conducting research and publishing their results. The Museum has received in the use of the building on street Starowiejska 30 and the Exhibition Hall is located on street Waszyngtona.

"House of Abraham" is headquartered museum until 15/08/2007 (up until the move to the building located on street Zawiszy Czarnego), while the Exhibition Hall was used until 1997 the square formed after its demolition, was built Center for Culture and Entertainment "Gemini" Since 2001. The Museum of the City of Gdynia in the center of the room rents, which has been designated for the exhibition. In 2002, the construction of a modern museum building - the target of establishment of The Museum of the City of Gdynia. The new building was inaugurated 16.11.2007r. The opening was attended Polish President Lech Kaczynski.

The origins of museums in Gdynia associated with the person of Dr. Janina Krajewska.
